I joined healthcare work soon after my higher secondary education, initially working as a non-professional Physician/Clinical Assistant at then Central Hospital, the main government hospital in Male’, Maldives. I was one of the first two Clinical Assistants at IGMH when it initially started services with just Pediatric Outpatient services. That exposure has had a lasting effect as I went ahead to join medical school in Pakistan. I returned to IGMH after competing MBBS and a brief residency training in Pediatrics. That was when I began my work in Infant & young child nutrition, training as a breastfeeding counselor and lactation specialist. I studied Pediatrics at Melbourne, Australia; gaining clinical experience at RCH, RWH and Austin Hospital. I had the absolute pleasure of working with and learning while doing my thesis on Iron Chelation at Monash Medical Center. After graduating, I returned to work at IGMH again. Then travelled to AIIMS, Delhi to complete a Fellowship in Neonatology before once again returning to IGMH.
Since 2012, I left government service, taking up the role of CMO at ADK Hospital while practicing as a Pediatrician; especially in establishing neonatal services in the private sector in the Maldives. Lately I have concentrated on establishing patient-centered service models, patient-safety activities and QI tasks while helping plan strategic advancements to healthcare via the private sector in Maldives.
